Friends Remember Their Mothers with Mah Jongg
Wendy Kleinman and Jodi Shapiro, both residents of Scarsdale, NY, have a lot in common. They grew up in neighboring towns in New Jersey and have young sons who are the same age. Unfortunately, they also share a painful experience: both lost their mothers to cancer a few years ago.
While reminiscing about their moms, Wendy and Jodi realized their mothers shared a love of Mah Jongg. So, to honor them and to raise funds to help others impacted by cancer, Jodi and Wendy decided last year to host the First Annual Gilda's Club Westchester Mah Jongg Invitational in memory of Sandi Schneider and Joan Blieberg.
"Our moms were our best friends, our 'go-to' people," said Wendy. "Gilda's Club Westchester is the 'go-to' friend for anyone impacted by cancer - men, women, children, and teens - and their families and friends."
Last year's event attracted 120 people and raised more than $50,000 for Gilda's Club Westchester. Wendy and Jodi look forward to continuing the event every year.
"Many of mom's friends came to play at last year's event and it was a wonderful way to remember her and help others with cancer," said Jodi. "Gilda's Club Westchester is a warm, welcoming place that helps anyone in need."
The Second Annual Mah Jongg Invitational took place on Wednesday, May 25th at 10:30 a.m. at Willow Ridge Country Club in Harrison, NY. All proceeds benefited Gilda's Club Westchester.
